The tourism industry in China

Current situation of tourism industry

According to the research conducted by the National Bureau of Statistics, there is an increasing interest from Chinese people in traveling day by day in recent years. As for the domestic tour, it increased from 20.00% to 34.16% between 2008 and 2014, moreover, the number of overseas tourists has increased by 0.79 million in the same period. Besides, the traveling service income increased from 1,597,750 million RMB to 4,164,450 million RMB and the gross profit increased at a stable rate. Although China ranked 12 out of 113 counties in terms of its natural tour sites in the world, it could not get a high level of recognition of its traveling infrastructure and traveling service as it is ranked 47.

Problems and potential analysis

The existing problems for the traveling industry are as follows. First of all, It focuses less on the restoring and the protection of natural sites as the development of Chinese tourism industry is currently damaging the fauna and flora. From an environmental point of view, the development of sustainable tourism, protection and restoration are crucial but always ignored. The amount of traveling agencies like Kanghui or Chunqiu, remain numerous, there were 26054 travel agencies in China in 2014, but world-class traveling agencies are still rare. For the large scale travel agencies, most of them fail to provide innovate travel service, almost all of them are following the same travel route and arrange the same itineraries for Chinese tourists. For instance, most of  the tour guides are taking tourists to visit the West lake park as long as they plan to travel to Hangzhou and many tourists will visit the Forbidden City once they decide to travel to Beijing, and Putuoshan island for its numerous temples. For small travel agencies, the quality of service and they are under standard management  are the important issues to be improved. Next, the traveling products are familiar from north to south and from east to west as tourists can buy two bracelets with the same design in different historic sites.

Ecotourism in China

Traveling developers should pay more attention to the protection of the natural resources to minimize the restoring cost. For instance for travel agencies, it would be better to update and upgrade the different types of service and cultivate market brand to break the bottleneck. For the travel manufacturing industry, unique souvenirs need to be designed in order to be sell. All in all, innovation need to be brought to the travel industry as it is experiencing a wonderful time in China, besides, the natural resource has to be more protected by professional within the tourism industry, this line could be an opportunity for the professionals of the sector.

The Automotive Industry in China

With 22% of market growth last year in China, the premium segment is indeed still ahead within the Chinese automobile market, even if this Eldorado is slowly decreasing.

1 / The market demand

In 2015, only 75 on 1000 Chinese have a vehicle. And reaching this milestone represents always the sign of a social ascent in a country. However, the structure of the automotive market  is changing a lot, the market of supply is becoming a market of demand. Indeed, after the upper classes emerge a new group of customers: the middle classes. BMW noted that 310 million Chinese will be urban by 2030. So here is a huge new potential target market.

2 / A higher mix

The authorities in Shanghai want to double the minimum wage, which is now at 2600 RMB. With higher income, they will buy cars and invest in car equipment; the overall market with the product mix will increase. The Interior division, which makes dashboard or door linings, boards takes full advantage of this phenomenon.

The mix increases also in the medium segment  with a new booming segment: the entry premium.

3 / The growth of the Chinese Brands

These new models have benefited the growth of Chinese manufacturers in the first quarter, after months and months of decline.

According to figures from the firm PwC, sales of Chinese brands jumped by more than 20% in the first quarter. This rebound has however confirmed the obligation for the European, American and Japanese to seek new models of business.

4 / Some more regulations

The Chinese authorities are pushing the emergence of local manufacturers.  This policy is also supported by the regions which, from Shanghai to Shenzhen or Chengdu, all have a large local group. For new entrants such as Renault, this means a drastic regulation to follow. Indeed, the French multinational cannot produce that compact vehicles, according to the terms of its license, and must prove its profitability or install an on-site R & D  centre or engine plant to grow.

5 / Sourcing local

More generally, sourcing and adapt to local producers is essential to a level that it is much more integrated than the template designed for the Western market. For the older players, it also important to seek for diversity. This is what BMW is currently doing. The German manufacturer will soon produce in China a local version of the SUV X 3 but also an MPV, an adapted declination of its minivan front-wheel drive, the Active Tourer.

With the rise of social development, education in China has made a great difference. Compared with foreign education systems, schools in china are impressively unique. This article aims to introduce the present education system in China.

Primary Education

In China, primary school education is compulsory and it lasts 5-6 years (In some provinces, the 6th grade is set in junior school).

Children start schools at age six (seven in some areas). The language of instruction is Mandarin Chinese with the exception of the primary schools that mainly admit ethnic minority students. A typical school year is comprised of two semesters and runs from the month of September to July. Students attend classes five days a week and primary school education currently includes nine compulsory courses; Chinese, Mathematics, Social Studies, Nature, Physical Education, Ideology and Morality, Music, Fine Art, and Labor Studies. Foreign Language is normally offered as an elective course. In order to graduate, all students are required to pass graduation examinations in the subjects of Chinese and Mathematics. The examinations are normally designed and administered by schools with guidance from local educational authorities. Students move on to 3-year junior (lower) secondary schools (chuzhong 初中) after graduating from primary schools.

Middle Education

Junior (lower) secondary education lasts three years, following the completion of primary school. In order for students to obtain a certificate of graduation, students are required to pass graduation examinations and meet minimum physical education standards. These exams are designed and administered by local educational authorities. Students are typically examined in the following subjects for graduation: Chinese, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and Foreign Language (for the majority, English). Completion of junior (lower) secondary education also marks the end of a 9-year (6+3) compulsory education program.

Secondary Education

After the completion of junior (lower) secondary school, students can choose to enter either general (academic) senior secondary school or a vocational senior secondary school. General (academic) senior secondary school lasts 3 years and vocational senior secondary school lasts 3 to 4 years. Senior secondary school is known as (gaozhong 高中) and vocational senior secondary school is known as (zhongzhuan 中专) in China. Students wishing to continue their study in the general (academic) track must pass the entrance examinations for general senior secondary schools, which is also known as (zhongkao 中考) in China. Designed and administered by provincial educational authorities, the entrance examination includes the same subjects as the junior secondary graduation examinations. At the end of their final school year, graduates of senior secondary schools seeking admission to post-secondary education are required to take the National Higher Education Entrance Examination, also called National College Entrance Examination (NCEE), commonly known as (gaokao 高考) in China.

Vocational Education

Vocational education programs are offered at both the secondary and post-secondary levels. Vocational senior secondary schools provide subject and occupation specific education and training. This education is highly employment oriented and graduates normally enter the workforce. However, it does offer some access to further education, particularly in the technical/vocational specialties. Since the year 2000, the Ministry of Education (MOE) has allowed graduates of vocational secondary schools to take the NCEE and be admitted into higher education programs.

Higher technical/vocational education is available at the zhuanke (专科) level, which require two or three years of full-time post-secondary study. It is possible for graduates of higher vocational education programs at the zhuanke level to obtain a “benke 本科” degree (Bachelor’s degree) certificate through an upgrading program, but this is limited to a select number of fields. Vocational higher education institutions are currently administered at the provincial level.

Tertiary Education

Higher education is provided by institutions of various types including general and technical universities, specialised institutions, professional universities, military institutions, medical schools and colleges, independent colleges, and various adult higher education institutions. Entry to university depends primarily on how well the students perform in their entrance examinations. Students with outstanding academic performance in their secondary schools can potentially be granted an exemption from the entrance examination and be recommended directly to the university of their choice through a method called (baosong 保送). In addition, some private institutions are exempted from the NCEE (gaokao) and accept all students who can afford the tuition fees. Prestigious universities (key institutions) maintain higher admission standards, and therefore require higher NCEE (gaokao) scores than other institutions. Entry to higher education in China is highly competitive.

Quick Insight of the China National Tobacco Corporation

The China National Tobacco Corporation (CNTC), which effectively holds a national monopoly on cigarette sales, has reported a net income of $21 billion dollars in 2012. China is the world’s biggest market for cigarettes, and it has reach this year 300 million of smokers, nearly 3 times as many as those in the next biggest smoking nation, such as India. In 2012, the tobacco market’s revenues have reached $122 billion, up from $47 billion in 2005. Despite tobacco control efforts by the Chinese government, Tobacco industry analysts foresee a growth within the Chinese market in both volume and value of the cigarettes sold. Even if the Chinese tobacco market has been registering low growth in sales volume, but healthy growth in sales value.

China has the intention to reach the international market and with this willing. Currently, less than one percent produced by the CNTC is exported each year. To reinforce its sales abroad, CNTC has to create strategic partnerships with other tobacco big groups, a collaboration that is profitable on both sides. Indeed, the big traded company will have the opportunity to grow their within within China thanks to the CNTC shares. Those big groups includes Japan Tobacco International (JTI), Philip Morris International (PMI), British American Tobacco (BAT), and Imperial Tobacco. This presence will allow CNTC to reach the emerging markets such as Eastern Europe and Latin america. This represent a great advantage and opportunity among the foreign groups, but the market remain limited and China is controlling the production and the domestic production and imports of foreign brands.

As the world’s biggest market for cigarette sales, the CNTC has the objective to become the key tobacco market players in the world by facing a lot of important challenge such as the health concerns, the slowdown of China economy. With a saturated market it is important to have a strong strategy and a better understanding of this specific market, in order to gain some market shares.
